The ABS light means the anti-lock brake system has a fault. You still have normal braking, without the anti-lock function (Honda, Ford), so you can drive on carefully and have it checked soon. If the red brake warning light comes on with it, the problem is more serious: have the car inspected immediately (Honda, Ford).
What ABS does
An anti-lock brake system automatically controls how much the wheels slip during braking: it senses how fast each wheel is turning and adjusts the brake pressure to it (FMVSS 135). In practice, it keeps the wheels from locking up when you brake hard.
What the ABS light means
The light, which federal rules require to be yellow and labeled “ABS” or “Anti-lock” (FMVSS 101), comes on when the system finds a problem. Honda’s manual says that with it on, the vehicle still has normal braking ability but no anti-lock function; Ford says you continue to have normal braking, without ABS, unless the brake system warning lamp also comes on.
The federal brake standard also counts an electrical failure in the anti-lock system as a reason for the car’s brake warning to come on (FMVSS 135).
When it’s urgent: ABS and the red brake light together
If the red brake warning light comes on at the same time, Honda says the electronic brake distribution system isn’t working either, which can make the car unstable under sudden braking: have it inspected by a dealer immediately. Ford warns that driving with the brake warning lamp on is dangerous, as braking performance may drop significantly and stopping can take longer.
If the brake pedal has no resistance, stop immediately in a safe place (Honda). See the brake warning light.
What to do
- Note what else is on. ABS alone: drive on carefully. ABS plus the red brake light: stop and get help.
- Leave more room. Without anti-lock, the wheels can lock in a hard stop, so allow more distance and brake gently.
- Have it checked soon by a dealer or repair shop (Honda, Ford).
ABS light at startup
Like other warning lights, the ABS light comes on briefly when you switch on the ignition, as a check that it works, and then goes out (FMVSS 101 allows a bulb check). Only a light that stays on, or comes on while driving, reports a fault.
Questions people ask
Is it safe to drive with the ABS light on?
If it’s the only light, yes, carefully: the normal brakes work, but without anti-lock (Honda, Ford). Have it checked soon. If the red brake light is also on, have the car inspected immediately.
Does the ABS light mean my brakes are failing?
Not by itself. It means the anti-lock function is off; the ordinary brakes still work (Honda, Ford).
What does it mean when the ABS and brake lights are both on?
A more serious brake problem: Honda says the electronic brake distribution isn’t working, which can make the car unstable when braking hard. Get it inspected immediately.
